The Scope of the Problem
- AI systems are making or influencing consequential decisions in:
- Hiring and recruitment (screening resumes, ranking candidates)
- Credit and lending (loan approval, interest rate setting)
- Healthcare (diagnostic support, treatment recommendations)
- Criminal justice (recidivism prediction, bail recommendations)

Why This Is Not Just a Technology Problem
A common misconception: AI ethics problems are engineering problems that engineers will solve.
The reality is more complex. AI systems reflect the choices made by the people who design them, the data they are trained on, the metrics they optimise for, and the deployment contexts they are placed in. These are human choices, made within organisational and economic contexts.

The Three Core Ethical Domains
Fairness and bias AI systems can produce discriminatory outcomes, often unintentionally. This happens when training data reflects historical biases, when protected characteristics are proxied by other variables, or when optimisation targets correlate with group membership.
Privacy and data rights AI systems consume enormous amounts of data, often including personal information. Questions of consent, data minimisation, purpose limitation, and individual rights are central.
Transparency and accountability Many powerful AI systems are difficult to interpret. When a model makes a consequential decision, can you explain why? Who is responsible when it is wrong?
The Practical Relevance for Non-Specialists
You do not need to be an AI researcher to engage with AI ethics. The questions that matter in everyday professional contexts are:
- What data was this system trained on, and does it represent everyone it will affect?
- What happens when this system is wrong, and who bears the cost?
- Is there meaningful human oversight of consequential decisions?
- Who is accountable if this causes harm?
- Are the people affected by this system aware of its use?
These are management and governance questions as much as technical ones. Asking them is part of responsible AI adoption.
